Role of Fate Romeo and Juliet Essay Example
Role of Fate Romeo and Juliet Paper In William Shakespeares play, Romeo and Juliet have fate is one of the main contributors that lead to their deaths. Because of fate, the play becomes exciting and it is exactly what makes the two young lovers meet each other in the first place. It was fate that a Capuletââ¬â¢s serving man told Romeo and Benvolio about the party where the two lovers meet, in the prologue of the play Shakespeare says that Romeo and Juliet are ââ¬Å"star-crossed loversâ⬠, and lastly, the flaws in Friar Lawrenceââ¬â¢s plan also contributed to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Therefore, fate is undoubtedly the most responsible for the couples heartbreaking tragedy. It is not a coincidence that Romeo and Juliet meet in the first place. A serving man comes across Romeo and Benvolio in the first act, unaware that they are Montagueââ¬â¢s, and informs them about the Capulet party: My master is the great rich Capulet: and if you be not of the house of Montagueââ¬â¢s, I pray come and crush a cup of wine ( Act 1, scene 2, 81-84). It is by fate that Romeo and Benvolio run into the Capulet serving man and discover the party. Finally, it is also a result of fate that the flaws in Friar Lawrences plan eventually lead to Romeo and Juliets deaths. For example, Friar Lawrences plan is ruined because Friar John is unable to deliver the message to Romeo: I could not send it here it is again nor get a messenger to bring it thee, so fearful were they of infection (Act 5, Scene 2, 14-16). Because Friar Lawrences message is crucial to the plan he says that the fact that it is never sent creates a major flaw that can turn out to be very deadly. For these reasons, Romeo and Juliets first meeting is sure to happen, fate being the most powerful force at work, determining their future. In conclusion, Romeo and Juliet were star-crossed lovers who were never supposed to be happy together, and both Romeo and Juliet knew that no good would come with their love for each other (Romeo, 1. . 106-111) (Juliet, 1. 5. 141). In this, it is learned that the tragic ending to Romeo and Juliet was inevitable, and that no matter what, they would not end up living happily as a couple. Taking into consideration that Romeo and Juliet are doomed to meet, love and die together, fate is clearly the dominant force for the most part of the play.

Working Capital Strategies Essays - Free Essays, Term Papers
Working Capital Strategies Essays - Free Essays, Term Papers Working Capital Strategies FIN/419 June 22, 2015 Michele Huss Working Capital Strategies Introduction Working capital is defined as as the difference between current assets and current liabilities ("Working Capital", 2015). Our team has reviewed important financial reports such as the most recent balance sheet and cash flows statements, taking relevant data to be analyzed for how it will impact cash management strategies. In order to have a distinct impact and increase profits there has to be growth and innovation, positively impacting consumer interest in Apples product line. To do this Apple executives and management have to have a clear image of where they are presently, and what needs to be accomplished to reach their goals. Included is a description of how current assets and liabilities affect cash flow management, this information is important because it allows management to make strategic decisions to increase revenue and market share. Our team has had the opportunity to make capital recommendations based on the assumption that Apples forecasted revenue will increase by twenty percent to management that includes detailed pro forma reports. The final area our team will focus on is how the increased revenue will effect Apples working capital policy, identifying lessons we have learned and highlighting areas that can be developed further. This gives members of senior management a clear outline of where this business Apple is and what it will take to attain their future financial goals. Increased Forecasted Revenues: MEGAN Any company's revenue has the ability to increase or to decrease each year. Let's observe Apple's current income statement; in accordance to Google Finance (2015), Apple's most recent income statement of March 3rd, 2015 had the company's total revenue at $58 million. Assuming we forecasted correctly, Apple's revenue increases 20% in 2016, let's say roughly $69 million. The company would have not only to perform well over the course of the year but also had to of developed a new piece of technology that the public loved. Over the past couple of years, Apple has managed to progress and present several products into the marketplace that clients excitedly expect. If a company's revenue increases it is most likely to increase their gross profit as well, and Apple appears to be using their working capital funds effectively. It is the information that's provided but financial statements; for example, balance sheet, income statement, & cash flow statement) that demonstrate whether that compa ny is profitable. And whether there is sufficient ability to meet the working capital also needs to the long-term debt. Current Assets & Liabilities Affect Cash Management: MEGAN The information one can obtain from financial statements provided by trend analysis, ratio analysis and the footnotes to the financial statements offer important information about the management of a company and its potential success over time. The only way anyone can learn how successful and profitable a company is involved careful and concise analysis of a company's financial statements. How are Apple's assets and liabilities affecting their cash flow? A closer look at the numbers demonstrates $231,839,000 in total assets and $120,292,000 in total liabilities (Yahoo Finance, 2015). So, increases in accounts receivable, inventory and prepaid expenses hurts the cash flow, decreases in these areas help the cash flow. Increases in short-term operating liabilities help cash flow where a decrease would hinder the cash flow. Apple does not seem to be in any distress at this point, and that is because of their innovative products. Poor cash flow makes nearly impossible to hire and retain d ecent employees; again Apple does not fall short here either. Lastly, the company's accounts receivable turnover and inventory (part of company assets) also to the actual cash flow analysis, determine how efficient revenues translate into cash flows. This aids in the determination when it comes to the company's health and stability. Capital Recommendation: MEGAN Any company, profitable or not should have a working capital recommendation. Calculating a pro forma is essential to the capital recommendation. According to Way (2007) a company's pro forma is the forecasted financial statements that are based on either anticipated future events or potentially changing business performance in upcoming periods. After research, I have constructed the following pro forma chart using the financial statements located in the Google Finance and Yahoo Finance references. Reference

Stages of a criminal trial Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Stages of a criminal trial - Essay Example This only comes after the first step of determining whether the trial should happen before a jury or a judge. The attorneys involved in the persecution gives details of the issues that surround the case to the court. He will further explain the point in which the prosecution plans to prove. The defense further gives their opening statements. In this case, the team will be trying to prove that the defendant is innocent. The opening of statement stage is only valid if other steps of the trial are successful (Felman, 2002). These stages include presentation of evidence to the court. There then follows cross examination of this evidence and the witnesses. The last stage is usually the closing statements, which summarizes the case and waits for the judge or the jury to make a decision. Clearly, the opening statement determines the direction of the case. It gives the judge and the witnesses some sort of focus so that the case is determined appropriately. One example of a criminal case is that of O.J Simpson murder case, also known as people of California vs. James Simpson case (Bugliosi, 1997). He was accused of murder of both his wife and her friend. He was defended by his lawyers Robert Shapiro and Johnnie Cochran. They issued opening statements to defend their client, stating that the blood samples were comprised. They also proved that the police had not conducted themselves appropriately. In the end, the jury decided that the James Simpson was not guilty, and was neither responsible of the two deaths. The stages for criminal trial were duly followed in this case for its

Themes in Romeo and Juliet Essay Example for Free
Themes in Romeo and Juliet Essay The story of Romeo and Juliet continues to interest and engage viewers and readers to the present day. One of the reasons for this may be that it explores universal themes which are still of interest and concern to everyday people. The play makes us think about issues, such as love, loyalty to oneââ¬â¢s family and friends, authority, and fate. Each of these themes is discussed below in relation to the play. Loyalty Romeo and Juliet contains many examples of loyalty of one person or group to another person or group. Loyal actions in the play do not always have positive results and cannot always be seen to have been the best course of action. At times, as we see in the opening of the play, loyalty can lead to violence and people behaving dishonestly or wrongly. Student Tasks 1. In your groups, discuss and decide on a definition of loyalty. In your answer consider the following: What is loyalty and how does a loyal person behave? Where does loyalty start and stop? 2. Think of at least three examples of when a person or group shows loyalty in Romeo and Juliet. Write down: a. Who was loyal to whom? b. How they were loyalââ¬âwhat did they do that showed loyalty? c. What the result of their actionsââ¬âdid their loyalty have positive or negative outcomes in the end? 3. Using the scenes of Romeo and Juliet that we have studied in class, find three quotations that show that a character is feeling torn or pulled in two directions by their loyalties. Write down the quotation and explain what it shows about the character and to whom they are loyal. Authority Authority is illustrated and explored in Romeo and Juliet. In Shakespeareââ¬â¢s time, authority was very closely linked in peopleââ¬â¢s minds to the naturalà order of the world and to the will of God. For example, the authority of the king or queen was believed to be given to them by God. Therefore, anyone who went against the authority of the king or queen would be considered to be committing a crime or sin against the wishes of God. People who went against authority were seen as going against the natural order and many people believed that this could only end in disaster. Student Tasks 4. There are many other words related to the word ââ¬Ëauthorityââ¬â¢. For example: authoritarian, authorize, authoritative. Look up each of these words and find out what form of word that they are, for example, noun, adjective, adverb. Write a brief definition for each of the words including the word ââ¬Ëauthorityââ¬â¢. 5. Find and write down three examples from the play where one person or group has authority over another group. 6. Describe three situations in the play when a person or group disobeys authority. What is the end result in each situation? Which of these examples of disobedience are the most serious ones in your opinion? 7. Are there any situations in Romeo and Juliet where people in authority do not do their jobs properly? For example, do the people in authority always carry out their jobs as carefully and as well as they should? 8. What message or idea do you think Shakespeare might have wanted to say in Romeo and Juliet about the nature of authority and about obeying authority? Love Love in Romeo and Juliet is presented almost as a disease that makes you physically ill and that makes you behave in a foolish way. Student Tasks 9. Read the two statements about the theme of love in Romeo and Juliet. Asà a group, choose the statement that you agree with more and find quotations and examples from the play to support your opinion. Be prepared to contribute your ideas to a class discussion. a. ââ¬Å"Romeo and Julietâ⬠is one of the greatest love stories of all times.â⬠b. ââ¬Å"Romeo and Julietâ⬠is more about passion, hate, and the importance of obedience than it is about love.â⬠Fate versus free will In Shakespeareââ¬â¢s time, fate was seen as your personal fortune or destiny that was predetermined by God. You could escape or avoid it. Your fate was said to be aligned with the stars (that is why astrologers have such importance for some people). On the other hand, there is free will. This is where a person takes control and makes his or her own destiny thereby changing the will of God. This was seen as a sin. Student Tasks 10. Write down three examples of fate or free will from Romeo and Juliet. 11. What message was Shakespeare trying to convey about fate and free will?

Confucianism and the west :: essays research papers
Throughout the course of the first half of the semester we have taken a broad scope of the major aspects of the phenomena that has been the recent history of China. When studying Modern China a common thread of ethical, cultural, religious, political, social, and economic aspects can be analyzed in relationship to Confucianism and its affect on international relations. These aspects show that historically (particularly the nineteenth century) China initially resisted the acceptance of Western influence in order to maintain its high level of uniqueness, isolation, and Confucianism which has bred its prosperity and demise. From its early to modern societies it was abundantly clear that China would be a largely Confucian-based society. Confucianism is a major system of thought in China. Developed from the teachings of Confucius and his disciples, their ideals centered on concern with the principles of good conduct, practical wisdom, and proper social relationships. Confucianism has influenced the Chinese attitude toward life, and set the patterns of living and standards of social value. The keynote of Confucian ethics is jen, variously translated as "love," "goodness," "humanity" and ââ¬Å"respect for your neighborâ⬠(http://www.formosa-kingdom.com/chinese/). Jen is a supreme virtue representing human qualities at their best. In human relations, jen is manifested in chung, or faithfulness to oneself and others. Other important Confucian virtues include righteousness, propriety, integrity, and filial piety. It is in this light that thoughts of Confucius can so la rgely affect all facets of life. Confucianism can affect and determine the ethical viewpoints of entire nations. The ideal social structure of East Asia was that of a Confucian hierarchy followed individually by a strong familial structure. Chinese society was modeled in a true Confucian structure with governmental workers being the elite, followed by the crop producing farmers, then the merchants, and finally soldiers. Chinese ethics place an enormous emphasis upon respect. It was my understanding from discussion and research that a Confucian society is primarily based on honor and the ideology that everything is done in the best interests of the family or society. Confucius states in the first article of his constitution that: ââ¬Å"Harmony should be held a treasure, and the person who eschews selfish opposition should receive honorâ⬠(East Asia, pg. 64 from last year). This was the case in the book Thousand Pieces of Gold when a young girl named Lulu virtually sacrifices her entire life for the greater good .

History of Brazil Essay
It is a matter of fact that Brazil is a country of contrasts. One can easily observe that the development of this nation is incredibly uneven. Taking into consideration their past experience, the Brazilians are seeing some very good times as a nation. Certainly, they have overcrowding problems. However, each country has its own difficulties and tries to overcome them. Thus, the diversity of this country and its amazing history has brought a ââ¬Å"mixing bowlâ⬠of culture preparing a bright future for Brazil. It is widely known that four major groups make up the Brazilian population. They are the Portuguese, who colonized Brazil in the 16th century; Africans brought to the country as slaves; various European, Middle Eastern, and Asian immigrant peoples who have settled in Brazil since the mid-19th century; and indigenous people of Guarani and Tupi language. (Skidmore, 131) Brazil is the only Latin American nation that takes its language and culture mainly from Portugal. Intermarriage between indigenous people or slaves and the Portuguese was a common phenomenon. Despite the fact that the major European ethnic culture of Brazil was once Portuguese, waves of immigration have greatly contributed to a diverse ethnic and cultural heritage. Admiral Pedro Alvares Cabral claimed Brazilian territory for Portugal in 1500. The early explorers brought back a wood with them that produced a red dye, pau-brasil. This is where the land received its original name. Portugal began colonization in 1532 and made the area a royal colony in 1549. During the Napoleonic Wars, fearing the advancing French armies, King Joao VI left the country in 1808 and set up his court in Rio de Janeiro. He was brought home later in 1820 by a revolution, leaving his son as regent. When Portugal wanted to reduce Brazil to colonial status again, the prince declared Brazilââ¬â¢s independence on Sept. 7, 1822. Thus, he became Dom Pedro I, emperor of Brazil. Harassed by his Parliament, Pedro I resigned in 1831 in favor of his five-year-old son who became emperor Dom Pedro II in 1840. Emperor Pedro II ruled to 1889 when a federal republic was established as a result of a coup dââ¬â¢etat organized by Deodoro da Fonseca, marshal of the army. A year earlier, while Dom Pedro II was in Europe, the Regent Princess Isabel had abolished Slavery. Abreu, 311) Dom Pedro II was a popular monarch. Yet discontent grew up and, in 1889, he had to resign because of a military revolt. Although a republic was proclaimed at that time, Brazil was ruled by military dictatorships until a revolt allowed returning gradually to stability under civilian presidents. From 1889 to 1930, the government was a const itutional democracy. The presidency was alternating between the dominant states of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais. This period ended with a coup dââ¬â¢etat that placed a civilian, Getulio Vargas, in the presidency. He remained as a dictator until 1945. From 1945 to 1961, presidents of Brazil became Eurico Dutra, Vargas, Juscelino Kubitschek, and Janio Quadros. When Quadros abdicated in 1961, he was succeeded by Vice President Joao Goulart. (Abreu, 329) Goulartââ¬â¢s years in office were marked by high inflation, total economic failure, and the increasing influence of radical political parties. The armed forces alarmed by these developments organized a coup dââ¬â¢etat on March 31, 1964. The coup leaders chose Humberto Castello Branco a president, followed by Arthur da Costa e Silva (1967-69), Emilio Garrastazu Medici (1968-74), and then Ernesto Geisel (1974-79). All of them were senior army officers. Geisel began a liberalization that was carried further by his successor, General Joao Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo (1979-85). In the last of a long series of military coups, General Joao Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo became president in 1979. He pledged a return to democracy in 1985. Figueiredo not only allowed the return of politicians exiled or banned from political activity during the 1960s and 1970s, yet also permitted them to run for state and federal offices in 1982. (Alden, 284) However, at the same time, the Electoral College consisting of all members of Congress and also six delegates chosen from each state continued its activities of choosing the president. The election of Tancredo Neves on January 15, 1985, the first civilian president since 1964, brought a nationwide wave of optimism and activity. He was elected from the opposition Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB). (Alden, 287) However, when Neves died on April 21, Vice President Sarney became president. The latter was widely distrusted because he had previously been a devoted member of the military regimeââ¬â¢s political party. Collor de Mello won the election of late 1989 with 53% of the vote in the first direct presidential election in his 29 years. (Abreu, 378) Mello promised to lower the persistent hyperinflation by following the path of free-market economics. Having faced impeachment by Congress because of a corruption scandal in December 1992, Mello finally resigned. Vice President Itamar Franco took his place and assumed the presidency. Fernando Cardoso, a former finance minister, won the presidency in the October 1994 election having 54% of the vote. He took office on January 1, 1995. (Skidmore, 232) Cardoso has organized the disposal of bad government-owned monopolies in the electrical power, telecommunication, port, railway, mining, and banking industries. His timely proposals to Congress included constitutional amendments in order to open the Brazilian economy to greater foreign participation and to implement such sweeping reforms as social security, government administration, and taxation so as to reduce excessive public sector spending and considerably improve government efficiency. Alden, 298) During his short time in the office, Cardosoââ¬â¢s economic wisdom has made a measurable progress in overcoming Brazilââ¬â¢s poverty level. It is remarkable to observe how the Brazilian government makes certain efforts in order to address basic needs of its people such as education, distribution of meals, health care, and the promotion of childrenââ¬â¢s rights. Co-signed by the President of Brazil and 24 state governors, the ââ¬Å"Pact for the Childrenâ⬠is intended to fully implement the constitutional and legal obligations providing for protection of children and adolescents. Several federal agencies supervise the execution of government programs for children and adolescents aimed to give Brazilian youth opportunities for a better life, shelter, education, and love. Thus, if not forgetting about the past mistakes and taking care of its nation, the Brazilians will surely come to the brightest future.
